Car accidents: Child dead in Georgia
A 2-year-old child has been tragically killed following an accident with an alleged drunk driver, according to local sources. Police in Georgia responded to the crash that also injured the child’s parents. As with all fatal car accidents, especially those suspected to involve drunk driving, this tragedy is still under investigation. The charges against the other driver have not been made public at this time.
According to the report, it appears that between 10:30 and 11 p.m. a vehicle carrying two adults and a child was rear-ended in an intersection by a pickup truck. The force of the impact killed a 2-year-old boy and sent his mother, a 23-year-old woman, to the hospital with injuries described as serious. The woman is 25 weeks pregnant, but there is no word at this time whether the accident will have any impact on the pregnancy.
The driver of the car was also taken to the hospital with several broken bones. The driver of the truck, a 23-year-old local man, does not appear to have been injured. He is believed to have been drunk behind the wheel as well as distracted, leading to the crash. It is unclear whether he is in police custody at this time.
If the man is proven to have been drunk behind the wheel, he could face jail time and the loss of his license. Separately, Georgia state law allows the victims of car accidents and their families to file personal injury and/or wrongful death lawsuits against any driver found to be materially responsible for an accident. These suits are handled in civil court and do not require a conviction or even a criminal charge to be filed.
