Encouraging news on traffic deaths in 2019

Historically speaking, traffic deaths have fallen. However, there was a trend over a few recent years in which road fatalities increased, in part because of the use of smartphones behind the wheel and the role of driver distraction. That said, there is encouraging news. The statistics from 2019 show a third year in a row of declining fatalities.

The drop was just a mere 1.2% from 2018 to 2019. However, when considering that traffic deaths are almost always between 35,000 and 40,000 people, even a small drop can save hundreds of lives. If these trends continue, we could see thousands of lives saved every year. We’re never going to have a world with no fatalities or injuries, but it’s still good to see that the roads are getting safer.

It’s also important to reiterate that this is the third year in a row with such a drop. That shows that it’s more than just a fluke, a minor shift in statistics before they rise again. Even though people drove more and covered more miles in 2019, the fatalities still decreased.

Of course, that does not necessarily mean that people crashed less often. It could just be that advances in medical care and in-car safety systems have made it more likely that people will survive with injuries. For instance, automatic braking systems may not stop a car entirely, but changing the speed of the accident from 55 miles per hour to 35 miles per hour can drastically alter the results of said accident.

If you get injured in a car crash, you may find yourself facing significant medical bills and other losses. You need to know how to seek compensation for your injuries. An experienced advocate may be able to help.
