Know these 5 causes of motorcycle crashes
Riding a motorcycle can be dangerous, even if you wear protective gear and are cautious about where you ride. Unfortunately, many people lose their lives to riding, even though they’re obeying traffic laws and doing their part to stay safe.
There are five main causes of motorcycle collisions. These include:
- Speeding
- Debris in the roadway
- Drivers who don’t see the motorcyclists
- Distracted or impaired driving
- Mechanical problems with the motorcycle
While there is a chance that a crash you’re involved in could be a genuine accident, the likelihood is that one of these other issues played a role in the collision. Of them, speeding and distracted driving are two of the most common issues seen on the roads.
Distracted drivers are more likely to miss seeing an oncoming motorcyclist. They’re also more likely to violate your right of way while you’re riding. If you notice that a vehicle is weaving or that the driver is looking away from the road, it’s best to slow down or get around them, so you can get out of harm’s way.
Speeding is another big problem. The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported in 2017 that 32% of the motorcyclists who were part of fatal crashes were speeding. Keep your speed lower, and watch out for others who don’t.
If you do end up being involved in a collision, make sure you know your rights. You may be able to seek a personal injury claim and take steps to get compensation for the injuries that you’ve suffered. Drivers need to be cautious; if they aren’t, an experienced attorney can hold them liable.
